Gimkit assignments let students practice quiz content on their own time, without a teacher-hosted live session. Teachers set a game mode, a completion goal, and a due date — students play from any device and results appear automatically. This guide covers everything from setup to reading reports.
What Are Gimkit Assignments?
Gimkit assignments are self-paced sessions tied to a specific kit and game mode. A teacher creates the assignment, sets a cash or question goal, and shares a link. Students complete the assignment independently — at home, in a study hall, or during distance learning days.
Assignments are exclusive to Gimkit Pro accounts. Free-tier teachers cannot create them. Once created, assignments stay open until the due date passes or the teacher closes them manually.
Progress saves automatically every minute, so a student who closes the tab mid-session picks up where they left off. Students can also replay a completed assignment, though only the first attempt counts toward the teacher’s report.
How to Create a Gimkit Assignment Step by Step
- From your Gimkit dashboard, find the kit you want to assign. Click the “Assign HW” button next to it. Alternatively, go to the Assignments section and select a kit from there. If you haven’t built a kit yet, you’ll need to create a kit in Gimkit first.
- Choose a game mode from the mode picker. Only solo-playable 2D game modes appear here — modes that require teams or groups are excluded.
- Set the assignment options: due date, cash goal, and (optionally) a question goal. If both goals are active, the assignment ends as soon as either one is hit. Link the assignment to a Gimkit class so students see it in their dashboards automatically.
- Click “Create Assignment.” Copy the link from the Share section and distribute it via Google Classroom, email, or any LMS. Students don’t need an account to play — they just enter their name when they open the link.
Which Game Modes Are Available for Gimkit Assignments?
Only solo 2D modes work in assignments. As of early 2026, four modes are supported:
Relative student engagement by mode type — Cash Tycoon is exclusive to assignments
Don’t Look Down is a vertical platformer where correct answers keep a character climbing. Cash Tycoon is the only mode built exclusively for assignment use — it doesn’t appear in live game mode selection. These modes also use Gimkit’s smart repetition system, which surfaces questions students have answered incorrectly more frequently.
How Students Complete a Gimkit Assignment
Students open the assignment link or find it in their dashboard under the connected class. They enter their name (or log in if they have an account) and start the session.
The assignment ends when a student hits the cash goal or the question goal — whichever comes first. After finishing, an “Assignment Complete” screen shows their results. Students who don’t see that screen have not finished the assignment yet.
Students earn XP from completed assignments, the same as in live games. They can replay a finished assignment, but only the first attempt appears in the teacher’s results view.
How to View Gimkit Assignment Results and Reports
From the dashboard, open Assignments and click the relevant assignment. Select the Results tab at the top. Results filter by three statuses: Completed, Working On It, and Has Not Started. You can also filter by class and sort by first name or last initial.
For a deeper breakdown, click “Open Report.” The report shows accuracy per question, average cash earned, question difficulty ratings, and individual student performance. Reports default to student view — switch to question view from the left panel to see which questions caused the most errors.
Linking assignments to classes makes a significant difference here. Without a class, you can’t view multiple attempts by the same student side by side, and the class filter won’t appear in the sort options.
FAQs
Do Gimkit assignments require a paid account?
Yes. Gimkit assignments are only available to teachers with a Gimkit Pro subscription. Free accounts cannot create or assign them to students.
Can students complete Gimkit assignments without an account?
Yes. Students without a Gimkit account can open an assignment link, enter their name, and play. Results still appear in the teacher’s dashboard under that name.
What happens if a student closes the assignment before finishing?
Progress saves automatically every minute. When the student reopens the assignment link, they return to the point where they left off.
Can teachers change the goal after an assignment is created?
No. Cash and question goals are locked once an assignment is created. You would need to delete the existing assignment and create a new one with updated settings.
How many game modes can be used in Gimkit assignments?
Four modes currently support assignments: Fishtopia, Cash Tycoon, Farmchain, and Don’t Look Down. Cash Tycoon is exclusive to assignments and does not appear in live game mode selection.
